I have a black insurance agent. He gave me a slim plastic container to put my registration and proof of insurance in. I also usually have my wallet in my center console until I get out of the vehicle. So when I get pulled over, I can already have those things prepared when they approach my window, which will be rolled down along with all my other windows. My hands will be on the steering wheel and my car will be off. The reason why we have to do that is because so many other black males like to commit crime and we as law abiding black males get unfairly profiled because of that.

I agree with all the preparation that, unfortunately, must be done to deal with the reality vs the legality of the situation. I do want to comment on “The reason why we have to do that is because so many other black males like to commit crime and we as law abiding black males get unfairly profiled because of that” because it’s somewhat misleading. Statistically, black (and brown) males are stopped exponentially more than white males. If stopped in equal proportion, which, unfortunately, I believe will never happen, studies have shown crime or findings (drugs, etc) would be relative. In other words, white males tend to commit minor, non-violent crimes – which is why most people are in jail/prison – at the same or greater rates as black and brown males, they just aren’t stopped. Further, even when they are stopped, they are also released without charges far more often than black/brown males.

Thanks for the shout out on the show. I definitely feel like no matter how much I pay attention to Ferguson news, the stress is still there. Most of my Black male friends agree with me, but I’ve had very interesting push back from non Black male friends, and women (no matter the race). Most of the pushback deals with the effect of the 24/7 news cycle on how we feel about ourselves, and that no matter how horrible Ferguson is, the news makes you feel it MORE when you’re dialed into it. I agree to an extent, especially when looking at the imagery and soundbites that the news chooses to loop constantly specifically to provoke emotion. But I try to explain to people that have provided pushback that I’ve ALREADY been provoked by harassment experienced by myself or friends. That wouldn’t change no matter how much news I absorb. In this country, I think it’s something only Black men can understand.
